Edinburgh Gaelic Festival 3-10 November
A festival celebrating Gaelic’s place and community in Edinburgh.
Seachdain na Gàidhlig was first run by the University of Edinburgh in 2014, but after two successful SnaG’s, in Spring and Autumn 2014, it was agreed that Seachdain na Gàidhlig should belong to all of Edinburgh. Seachdain na Gàidhlig is now a city-wide festival run by a committee of volunteers, with support from the University of Edinburgh’s Gaelic Officer and the Iomairt Dhùn Èideann Gaelic Officer. Seachdain na Gàidhlig is a celebration of Edinburgh’s Gaelic community and Gaelic’s place in the capital city.
The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh University Students Association (EUSA) and the Edinburgh Gaelic Festival will be offering a designated Gaelic space at the Pleasance through the Edinburgh Gaelic Festival 2017. From 4-10th November, there will be a separate space for Gaelic in the EUSA café at the Pleasance from 11am-9pm every day.
The Scottish Storytelling Centre is delighted to host four fantastic events, with storytelling, theatre and a talk.

Cearcall Chaluim 2017

’S ann le tachartas ùr togarrach – Cearcall Chaluim 2017 – a chuireas Bothan, an co-bhonn le Iomairt Ghàidhlig Dhùn Èideann, Seachdain na Gàidhlig gu dol am bliadhna. Mar urram do Chalum Chamshron nach maireann, a bha a’ fuireach an Dùn Èideann fad mòran bhliadhnachan, bheir a’ Bhan-Ìleach, Iseabail Nic an t-Sagairt, dhuinn òraid phoblach sa Ghàidhlig: ‘Dè cho saor ’s a tha sinn an-diugh?’ An dèidh na h-òraid, gheibhear glainne fìon’ is cothrom faighinn a-staigh an asgaidh gu Bothan sònraichte le Gary West is caraidean sa Chanonsgait bho 2030.
Bothan, in partnership with Iomairt Ghàidhlig Dhùn Èideann, will open this year’s Seachdain na Gàidhlig with a stimulating new event – Cearcall Chaluim 2017.
In honour of the late Calum Cameron, who lived for many years in Edinburgh, Iseabail Mactaggart from Islay will deliver a public lecture in Gaelic ‘How free are we today?’ A simultaneous audio translation in English will be available. There will be a wine reception afterwards and all those attending will also enjoy free entry to a special ‘Bothan’ with Gary West and friends in The Canons Gait Bar from 8.30pm.
This event will feature a real time translation from Gaelic to English for non-Gaelic speakers
Big Gaelic Beasties

Aisling Oidhche Meadhan Samhraidh / Midsummer Night’s Dream

It’s midsummer night and there’s definitely a tale to tell. What with the war between the King and Queen of the fairies, the lovers lost in the woods and the amateur actors rehearsing their play – there is some buffoonery to be had in this famously funny Shakespeare tale in Gaelic.

Tha dualchas Albais gnìomhachais Ghlaschu gu domhainn ann fhèin, is tha e a’ rannsachadh a dhàimh phearsanta ris a’ ghuth, ri blas is ri dualchainnt, is a’ rùrach airson nam faclan a chailleas sinn nuair a thèid sinn on fhearann chun a’ bhaile mhòir, na faclan a chailleas sinn nuair a sguabar gnìomhachas air falbh à àite, is na faclan a chailleas sinn nuair a thèid air sgaradh o ar n ionannachd chultarach fhèin.
Building a Nation is a spoken word and sound performance by poet and Gaelic learner Martin O’Connor. Steeped in the industrial voice of his own Glaswegian Scots, he explores the personal relationship with voice, accent and dialect and unearths the words we lose when we leave the land for the city, the words we lose when a place is swept by deindustrialization, and the words we lose when we are disconnected from our cultural identity.
