A welcome return for this lively showcase for the Scots language.
William Dunbar and Walter Kennedy, the two great makars at the court of
James IV, squared up to each other for a verbal battering, around 1508.
The verse is sublime, the insults are grotesque and the swearing is
genuine. This couldn’t be more Scottish if it tried. You, the audience,
get to judge the winner of this poetic pyrotechnic – who goes home
victorious? Dunbar? Kennedy? Ultimately, it’s the Scots language itself!
