The Alan Bruford Lecture – Fenian Heroes at Sea

Scottish Storytelling Centre

Already in some of the earliest surviving traces of the Fenian heroic tradition in medieval Irish literature, in similarly early references to historical Fianna, and in later Gaelic romance and folktale, there is the notion of travel across the sea. While heroes often undertake adventures abroad in other heroic story cycles, in this presentation we
will consider the special significance of Fionn and his men in the maritime context.
