AIYF: Young SCAT Traditional Music Course

AIYF: Young SCAT Traditional Music Course

Course dates: Monday, 1st August – Friday, 5th August 2016. The course takes place at the University of Aberdeen campus situated in Old Aberdeen.

Aberdeen International Youth Festival’s Young SC&T course offers children in P4-P7 the chance to develop their skills and explore traditional Scottish music over the course of a week, working alongside experienced tutors. Young people applying should be able to play some simple tunes on an instrument.

On the final day players will take part in a short performance as part of AIYF’s Up Close & Musical series. The course also offers young people the chance to meet and watch the older musicians from the AIYF Traditional Music School, and attend festival shows throughout the week.

Tutor Sharon Hassan has been involved in teaching traditional music for over 15 years, and runs Gadie Music which delivers workshops to over 100 young people on a weekly basis. Gadie Music also look after the North East Folk Collective, a group started in 2010 to nurture the music and song of the North East, and to support young people at a crucial stage of their performing and recording careers.

Aberdeen International Youth Festival is a highlight of the cultural calendar, and provides opportunities for both local and international young performers. Since 1973 it has been at the forefront of nurturing creative talent and it continues to support young people across all art-forms.
