Family Storytelling

The entertainment begins at 11am with a family storytelling session from Mrs Mash, the storytelling cook who loves cooking and stories so much that she’s combined the two to create tasty tales for all ages.

Mrs Mash uses interactive stories, songs, and rhymes with younger children and families to educate and encourage healthy living through a love of good grub. The St Andrew’s Day Specials include neeps and tatties, Faries Favourites and butter making to tame those runaway oatcakes.

Scottish Piper in Kilt playing the Bagpipes. At 3pm Andy Cannon invites you to join The Gaberlunzie Man – Lord of Misrule, jester and teller of tales – for his family storytelling event, Tales of a Grandson: My Story of Scotland.

With his bag of stories and pot of knowledge Andy is sure to whip up hysteria as he wades his way through the chaos of Scotland’s history, uncovering a fascinating fact or two along the way. Come along and play a part in Andy’s epic tale of Scotland.

This event is the first chapter of a larger storytelling project that began on 9th September 2013, which was the 500th anniversary of The Battle of Flodden and the week of his 50th birthday. Andy set off from Flodden Field on his year-long exploration of Scotland to create a contemporary response to Sir Walter Scott’s classic history of Scotland, Tales of a Grandfather. Throughout the year Andy will share small chapters from this great story with the project culminating in a full day of epic storytelling in October and November 2014 at the Scottish International Storytelling Festival.

During my fiftieth year I plan to travel throughout Scotland, telling the epic story of its past in five separate chapters from the dawn of pre-history right up until the outbreak of the Great War in 1914.

Come along to hear the first chapter of this epic new tale of Scottish history as part of your St Andrew’s Day celebrations.

Traditional Scottish Music

As well as Scottish storytelling, we have a traditional music workshop in the afternoon with an accompanying concert in the evening.

At 2pm Frieda Morrison and Aileen Carr delve into the treasure trove of the Greig Duncan folk collection. In the early 20th century, Gavin Greig and Reverend James Bruce Duncan compiled almost 2000 Scots songs, giving a fantastic insight into this part of Scotland’s social and cultural history. This workshop offers insight into the material and advice on how to perform it.

At 7.30pm you can listen to the riches of Scotland’s greatest folk song collection performed by some of the most acclaimed singers in Scotland, Frieda Morrison, Aileen Carr, Steve Byrne, Lucy Pringle, Alison McMorland, Geordie McIntyre, Sarah Beattie and Jo Miller, plus special guest Fraser Fifield.

35 of these pieces, from love songs to bothy ballads, are available to listen to in an online archive, developed by broadcaster and traditional singer Frieda Morrison, the Artist in Residence at Celtic and Scottish Studies at the Unviversity of Edinburgh.
