Fun Folk App – Fèis Rois

Fun Folk App

Through fun interactive activities, animations and films, we help you to introduce children aged five and under to Scottish traditional music, song, stories and ceilidh dancing. The app includes material in both Gaelic and Scots language.

Fun Folk is designed so that you can explore the different nursery areas while playing and singing along – as well as some fantastic interactive songs, there are three colourful illustrated stories, some ceilidh dance films to boogie along to and simple Gaelic and Scots words to learn. You can take part in some fun activities, including helping to make porridge, rowing a boat, flipping pancakes, playing instruments and lots more!

A team of research artists led by Michelle Burke worked with over 400 children in nursery schools across four Scottish local authority areas. Award winning animator, Gavin C Robinson brought the ideas to life through design and animation, with the music and stories being recorded by Barry Reid and a team of professional musicians from bands including Treacherous Orchestra and The Shee.

The app was funded by Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative along with North Lanarkshire Council, Highland Council, The City of Edinburgh Council and Celtic Connections.

The app was launched at a Creativity Day that we hosted at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh on 1 June 2016. Please note that the app is available for iPad and tablet only at present due to its size.

Eilidh, my daughter, loves the app! She especially likes Brochan Lom, and the fish game. She also likes watching the dancing, and is surprisingly patient at listening to the songs.
