Fringe 2019: Q&A with Faux Theatre on Celeste’s Circus

Name of your show:

Celeste’s Circus

How would you describe your show in one sentence?

A charming, modern puppet show, especially designed with a retro aesthetic to engage and enthral youngsters.

Is this the first time that you are performing at the Fringe?

An early version of what would later become Celeste’s Circus was first performed on the upstairs deck of a 1960s route master bus, a Fringe venue with a capacity of 25. Celeste’s Circus, in its current form, was first performed in 2016 at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, when it won the Best Children’s Show runner-up award.

What do you think sets your show apart from all the other Festival offerings?

Designed and performed by child therapist, performer and play specialist, Francisca Morton, Celeste’s Circus has been designed to engage even the youngest of viewers, whilst entertaining the bigger people who accompanied them.

The Centre’s Fringe showcase is exploring and reacting to the challenges we face in today’s world by sharing stories in all their forms – what is your show saying?

I believe that children – even infants – have a great level of intelligence. I aim to engage my young audience members, and those that accompany them to the show, in a world of wonder, laughter, and discovery. Even the youngest of viewers deserve access to quality theatrical experiences.

How do you #MakeYourFringe itinerary? What’s the show that you don’t want to miss?

I look through children’s theatre, puppetry and object/visual theatre shows, paying close attention to publicity photos, as the design of the set and costumes often speaks to me – the design of the show as a whole is often a reason to go along. Definitely seeing and looking forward to Roots by 1927, a favourite visual theatre company of mine.
