See poetry in BIG WORDS on the Royal Mile

Scottish Poetry Library

The Scottish Poetry Library is soon to bring some of Scotland’s finest writing to the streets of Edinburgh with BIG WORDS, a new project created in collaboration with the New Waverley development.

Launching on the morning of National Poetry Day, 8 October, BIG WORDS will see the Sailor’s Ark building on Canongate adorned with a 12x25m scaffolding sheet bearing a Scottish poem. The piece will be unveiled by Edinburgh Makar Christine de Luca and will stay up on the building until next summer, ready to be enjoyed by thousands of passers-by.

But, with thousands upon thousands of wonderful poems tucked away on the library’s bookshelves, choosing just one has proved a daunting task. To help them decide, the team have now asked the public to select the winner from a shortlist of 5 poems:

–          SpiralElizabeth Burns
–          To EdinburghValerie Gillies
–          WorkerWilliam Letford
–          FoundationEdwin Morgan
–          A Poem for MorningMargaret Tait

Click here to read the five poems and select your favourite. Voting closes on 30 September, with the winner revealed on 8 October, National Poetry Day.
