“Warp & Weft – Kilbarchan Woven in Story & Song” will be performed as part of the Scottish International Storytelling Festival on 24th October.
Weaving story, legend, music and song together, this event tells the history of the former Renfrewshire mill town of Kilbarchan from earliest times to the present day. Local storyteller, Anne Pitcher and singer, songwriter and author Ewan McVicar will be joined by local performers, including members of Kilbarchan Pipe Band, giving a flavour of the music of Habbie Simpson, the 16th century piper, and the town’s most celebrated inhabitant. (People born in Kilbarchan are still known as ‘Habbies’.), tickets are priced.
Anne Pitcher has spent most of her adult life in Kilbarchan and the father of Ewan MacVicar, recently awarded the Hamish Henderson Award for services to traditional music, was a Habbie. Both will be working with pupils at Kilbarchan School on local stories, music and song throughout September and October, culminating in a performance to the whole school on 22 October.
