Book David Hughes
David is a storyteller, science communicator and outdoor educator. With a background in ecological science, he tells stories to speak the land alive. David lends an easy charm and dry wit to the stories he tells and is comfortable telling stories around campfires, beneath magical trees or on stage.
David has a repertoire of stories to suit a wide variety of audiences and frequently incorporates musical soundscapes to his performances. Previously, he has worked as part of the Young Edinburgh Storytellers to create performance pieces that explore themes of identity, becoming and belonging in old Celtic myth. He has also developed solo pieces and commissions with various festivals across the UK, as well as facilitated training sessions and workshops on the craft of storytelling, youth work and nature connection.
David is interested in telling stories that whisper quietly over the noisy chatter of the everyday, that give us a glimpse into different ways we might find ourselves in right relationship with the rest of nature. Stories have a wild way with our imaginations, they speak directly to the ancient animal within the human. He recounts the first time he told a story:
The first time I told a story was to a small group of restless teenagers with additional support needs. We had gathered around the fire, and I was doubtful that a story would work as they couldn’t sit still or find focus… Regardless, I began.
I watched as the story claimed the imaginations of the listeners and where these young folk previously couldn’t focus on one thing, an enchantment settled over them. I could see the story playing out in their imaginations. It was pure magic.
I’ve been hooked on telling stories ever since.
David is based in Edinburgh but happy to travel anywhere in Scotland and further if required.
