Kirsten Milliken

Book Kirsten Milliken

Kirsten Milliken is a bold and enchanting storyteller who tells tales that inspire, entertain, and challenge. She is a compelling teller who fires up the imagination and expertly transports listeners through her absorbing storytelling.

Kirsten specialises in stories from Celtic and Norse traditions, particularly where they meet such as her homeland of Shetland. She tells stories from Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia with a focus on the Northern Isles and has a passion for tales from the Viking Age.

Her repertoire includes myths, legends, sagas, folk and fairy tales; from vast epics of warring gods, to more intimate tales of individual relationships and difficult choices. Often focusing on themes of environmental and social justice Kirsten creatively explores what they show us about the world we live in and our relationship with others.

As well as being a storyteller Kirsten is a historical interpreter and textile artist and loves combining the different strands of her work. She brings history to life by creatively interpreting objects and sites telling the stories of peoples and cultures of the past and teaches heritage crafts, encouraging artistic expression.

Kirsten works in all sorts of settings from schools, museums and libraries to community events, private functions and festivals. She has delivered performances, workshops and story walks throughout Scotland including the SISF Go Local programme and Global Lab series. Kirsten is very flexible and can adapt her performance style and content to fit the setting and audience. As much at home on stage with big audiences as the fireside with intimate gatherings, Kirsten’s performances are suitable for everyone from early years to the elderly, and she is especially adept at storytelling for older children and adults. Based in Edinburgh, she is happy to travel widely and is available for bookings across Scotland and further afield.

Never afraid of dark and difficult themes, Kirsten aims to stir passion and provoke action.

Her joy and enthusiasm for stories is infectious and has listeners immersed and intrigued from start to finish.
