The Scottish Storytelling Centre’s January – March programme combines high quality and rich variety, with comedy and spoken word featuring alongside storytelling, music and children’s shows. If you were a fan of our previous Speakeasy events, you may recognise some of the performers appearing this season; if not, look forward to discovering some fantastic new talents!
After a highly rated show here at the Centre last October, Men With Coconuts are back on Sat 30 Jan. Scotland’s foremost musical improv comedy troupe, the five-piece improvise games and scenes before creating a spontaneous Broadway-style musical based on audience suggestions. Each show is unscripted, spontaneous and a one-off – all the more reason to see the group again when they return on Sat 23 Apr and Sat 2 Jul!
Spoken word fans are well served in March with SHIFT/ A Best of Spoken Word, two shows featuring some of the most dynamic and provocative performers on the Scottish scene. On Fri 11 Mar, BBC Scotland Poet in Residence Rachel McCrum explores the boundaries of place, language and identity Do Not Alight Here Again, while writer and musician Bram E Gieben talks of nihilism, creation myths and political turmoil in the high-impact Ex Nihilo.
The following evening, Jenny Lindsay discusses themes including Scottish independence and Orwell’s 1984 in Ire & Salt, and Harry Giles presents Drone, a sequence of poems about the life and anxieties of an unmanned military drone. All four shows debuted during last year’s Fringe, each to fantastic reviews. Tickets are priced at £10, with a combined ticket of £15 for both shows also available.
Our final show of the season is The Last Laugh, a combination of comedy, theatre and storytelling. The show sees Keir McAllister (Winner of Best Comedy Writer at the Scottish Comedy Awards 2015) and Larah Bross discuss the reasons you should never date a comedian, and whether being funny is as important as being happy. An intelligent and thought-provoking exploration of love and happiness, which earned 4-star reviews at last year’s Fringe – don’t miss it on Thu 31 Mar.
