Q&A: Harry from Men with Coconuts

Here at the Centre for a limited run from 3 Aug to 11 Aug at 7pm, the Men with Coconuts haven’t slaved away concocting complex certifications of thematic nuances in a complexly plotted comedy show. No. Instead the rely on their off-the-cuff fast thinking, giving them a great reputation in the improv world, winning the Spiritof the Fringe Award at this year’s Prague Fringe Festival.

We grabbed Harry Gooch from the quintet for a few minutes to ask what we can expect and what they are looking forward to at the Fringe.Harry Gooch

What three words best describe a Men with Coconuts show?

Hilarious. Clever. Likeable.

You’ve performed at the Centre several times. Will your Fringe show be different to your regular shows?

I could tell you but I’d have to… no really, every show is different which is what makes it exciting! The Fringe show takes the same formula, to concoct a musical based on the inner workings of the audience and what they throw out into the mix with their suggestions.

Parts of your show are based on audience suggestions. What’s the weirdest one you’ve been given?

There is no such a thing as a weird suggestion in our books, we like them all and want to be challenged, but the most frequent (and annoying one) lately has been Trump!

You recently won the Spirit of the Fringe Award at the Prague Fringe – congratulations! How was your experience performing there? How does it compare to Edinburgh’s Fringe?

We love performing in Prague. It’s a much more relaxed atmosphere compared with Edinburgh because it’s a smaller festival.  Also, flyering is illegal so you spend less time promoting in the streets and more time watching shows and enjoying all the sights!

That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy the mad bustle of Edinburgh, because I love it… and don’t tell anyone but I actually enjoy flyering!

Which Fringe shows are on your must-see list for 2016?

Baby Wants Candy, Austentatious and The Ruby Darlings.
